Use your Ears

Unusual sounds or noises coming from within your tap which may echo down to the pipes, could be an indication there is a potential problem. Change in the taps internals or mixer body will affect its performance. It may present as a whistling noise which may also result in the restricted or inconsistent delivery of water. This could be an indication there is a blockage within the tap’s body itself or in the aerator leading to a restricted flow of water or water spraying in all directions. Whistling noises can occur in one of two scenarios.

1. Water pressure is too high. When water pressure is too high the sheer velocity of water being forced through a small aperture will result in an annoying whistling noise every time you turn on the tap. It’s the same whistling noise you produce when you pucker your lips and blow, only this noise can be more irritating and uncontrollable.

2. There is a blockage. If taps or pipes become partially blocked they effectively increase the water velocity, therefore producing the same symptoms as the above. Modern flow restrictors used in showers and aerators today are prone to blockages due to their minute apertures and should be checked at the first indication of restricted water flow or that annoying whistling noise. Failure to do so may result in the fracturing of your tap spouts or shower arms.

Water Flow is Not Consistent 

When it comes to water flow, it should always be consistent. But if you notice a change in water flow or an uneven stream, it can indicate an issue. Sometimes the problem is a build-up of mineral deposits in the tap body or aerator. To remedy the problem in the taps aerator unscrew it from the end of the tap’s spout and carefully brush the mesh screen with an old toothbrush under running water to remove any debris or calcium build up. For any stubborn calcium build up you may soak them in a bowl of vinegar for about an hour before rinsing and refitting to your tap. This process maybe sped up if the vinegar is heated to hot, not boiling before soaking.

Unsightly Stains

If you notice unsightly stains running down your taps it could mean your taps are fractured internally and have gone unnoticed for some time. It may also mean the cartridge is faulty or worn out and may need replacing. In older jumper valve taps it could mean the internal spindles are severely worn or maybe just the O-rings need to be replaced. If the body of your tap is worn or corroded it’s more than likely it’s time for a replacement. Similarly, if the finish of your tapware is discolored, worn away or cracked, it would assuredly need replacing. 

Tired or Worn Out

Sometimes small leaks or drips may be as simple as a worn out O ring or cartridge. Other times it may be a sign of worse things to come. Tapware that is passed its used by date may not only run up your utility bill but may cause damage to cabinets, counter tops and possible flooding if it gives way altogether. Leaks from your tap, tap hoses or water pipes should not be ignored but attended to as soon as possible in order to avoid running up costly repair bills.

4. Mounting Style

As briefly mentioned in the above, another decision is the mounting style of your tapware. While shower enclosures more often than not require wall mount mixers, bath tubs may call for wall or hob mount. Other Considerations 

When it comes to refurbishing or updating current bathroom and kitchen styles there needs to be some serious considerations. Obviously how much money you are planning to spend and to what extent you are willing to go to facelift your abode will greatly influence the end result. On the other hand it’s amazing what just a new coat of paint and some basic accessory updates like blinds etc. can do for your spruce up. In the case of tapware obviously when replacing twin handled taps with in wall singled levered mixers there needs to be some serious consideration. Of course in the case of a full renovation where tiles are being replaced anyhow this is not a problem. The other problem when replacing ‘three tap sets’ (hot/cold handles and spout) with a singled levered mixer on an existing basin hob or sink hob is that this will leave two unwanted holes exposed. In these instances basin, or sink blanking covers are available for the purpose of covering up these unwanted holes. Although this will be a cheaper and less complicated alternative as opposed to replacing the whole wash basin or stainless steel sink, the overall visual may suffer.

Differences

Manually operated taps as the name suggest are just that. Manually operated and determined by the user for the adjustment of the water temperature, flow volume and length of time the user requires by the manipulation of a lever, knob or handle. With automated taps the temperature and volume of flow is pre-set so this eliminates the operator’s control over this. Electronic sensor taps use an infrared sensor (transmitter) that sends an infrared signal and a receiver to detect the deflection when the users hand passes in front of the transmitted signal. The receiver sends the signal transmitting an electrical pulse that triggers a solenoid that opens the valve for the water to flow through. There is usually a timer that allows the water to run for a specified period before shutting off. The obvious differences between manual and automated taps from a hygiene point of view is that auto’ taps do not require the user to actually contact the tap but by simply placing ones hands within the sensors range triggers the solenoid actuated valve. This sensor is usually located under the spout area. The distance is adjusted close enough so that the sensor is not accidentally triggered by other reflective objects or passing patrons. With manual operated faucets the user has to physically touch the lever, handles or knobs in order to operate it. Other knee or foot operated taps may also be a serious consideration as these being essentially a mechanical device will deliver some of the same control benefits of manual operated taps but with the hygienic benefits of automated taps and because they eliminate the need of a power supply, and the costly maintenance required for the sometimes fickle electronic sensors and solenoids, they may well be the best solution for your situation.

What about Hygiene Benefits?

It is because automatic taps can be turned on without physical touch, that they are considered a more hygienic choice compared to a manual faucets. The idea is by eliminating the need of physical touch that the possibility of germs and bacteria being transferred from one person to another will be reduced. However, extended lever handles are commonly still used in hospitals and surgery theatres giving surgeons the ability to fully control the washing of hands by using their elbows to manipulate and control the level of water.

An independent study however by a number of specialists shows that automatic faucets may actually harbor more bugs than manually operated taps. According to researchers at Johns Hopkins Hospital, about 50% of the water samples from the automatic faucets tested positive for legionella and other bacteria. In contrast, a mere 15% of manual faucets harbored bacteria. But according to Dr. Emily Sydnor, an infectious diseases specialist at John Hopkins, the bacteria that was found poses no health risks for most people. Quite frankly, the water samples were taken throughout the hospital (as well as patient rooms), and there were no reports of patients getting infected from the water. This seat body has a hole, and it's through here that the water flows. Now, this is essentially a manually operated valve, with an external regulating knob or lever acting as the control element. To activate this simple mechanism, the knob or lever is turned, the ‘spindle’ moves upward away from the seat body, thus allowing the water to past through and to be delivered via a connected outlet of various sorts. This means essentially you would need one controller for the cold water and one for the hot water. Warm water is achieved by bridging the two via a T-shaped fitting known as a breech.

As opposed to the above, ‘single levered mixer’ taps combine the hot and cold water before it is released into the outlet. This is done by the utilization of two finely finished plates of ceramic that slide one above the other contained in a plastic housing (the mixing chamber) hence the name. The water only flows from its source when the top plate is maneuvered into position selecting either hot water usually by moving the control lever to the left, or cold water by moving the lever to the right, and anywhere in between for an  infinite combination of both. The amount of water that is released is essentially controlled by maneuvering the same ceramic (disc) plate via the common lever in an up/down or in/out motion. Thus the convenience of the so called ‘single levered’ mixer and thus for the name ‘mixer tap’.

Due to mandatory regulations for water conservation flow regulators, such as small plastic disc flow restrictors, commonly used in shower heads and in the aerators of taps have small V-shaped perforations and can easily be blocked by even the smallest amounts of Teflon tape or plumbers paste. Teflon tape and even pipe joint compound (sometimes known as plumbers paste) is commonly found to be the culprit where its careless use confining not just to the external threads of pipe fittings but covered also over the face of pipes. The result as with Teflon tape is that this excess tape is severed when these two joints come together resulting in this excess of tape or excess paste as with pipe joint compound, lodging itself somewhere in your new appliance.

Easy Installment 

Since the wall mounted faucet features a concealed body, the installment should be preplanned. Generally, in this case it is wise to install and test the all pipework and faucet before you tile the bathroom allowing for wall sheeting thicknesses and the thickness of tiles to ensure a successful and most desirable outcome is achieved.
